I began my career in jazz radio by creating a special program called “Jazz Flavours” in 1978 at WQXI-FM in Atlanta. The Program was a combination of acoustic and electric jazz with modern jazzy vocals. The format later morphed into a softer form that became known as the NAC format which became popular on radio stations all around the world.

The popularity of "Jazz Flavours" allowed me to move to New York in 1988 to work as music director and on air presenter for the start up of contemporary jazz station WQCD-FM (CD 101.9). I worked there until 1998 and during those ten years I developed and produced a syndicated version of the “Jazz Flavours” show as well as an interview program titled “Conversations.”

My work with international jazz programming began in the 1990’s and continues today. I have produced jazz programs that have been heard regularly in Japan (Japan FM Network and Bay FM 78 in Tokyo) and England (Two years with London and Manchester based Jazz FM) as well as worldwide on the the U.S. Government service The Voice of America (VOA).

I began producing and presenting the two-hour, weekly program “Jazz America” for VOA on July 4th, 1999. It continues today and is heard worldwide each weekend by an estimated audience of 94 million listeners.

In early 1999 I began my work in satellite radio as a programmer and presenter, creating various channels including the world’s only complete modern jazz channel, XM 72 Beyond Jazz, covering all aspects of jazz from the Fusion era of the 1960's through all its evolutionary phases up to today.

Now, with the creation of MOJA Radio, it’s time to take the wonders of Modern Jazz into the premier arena for the 21st century…the internet! MOJA Radio…Modern Jazz Radio…Jazz In The Present Tense…It’s A Brave, Cool World!

I was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and raised outside the city in what was a small rural town called King Of Prussia. There was a Mall. But around the Mall was pastures and beautiful parks, woods and big trees. This is what I loved most... being outdoors and climbing trees... making art... and listening to music... specifically all the albums (vinyl) that my parents had in the huge cabinet/radio/turntable in our den. It was filled with The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, CSNY, Neil Young, Curtis Mayfield, The Stylistics, Rare Earth, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Three Dog Night (on 8-track!), and too many others to list that I listened to over and over again until they were pretty worn out. I loved the smell of the albums, the ones that opened up and the artwork... the feel of the vinyl... it all made me love the music.

I tried my hand at instruments. I tried the flute, the violin, the guitar... I just couldn't do it. I wanted to make music too fast, I did not have the patience for the baby steps... so I just collected music instead. And boy did I collect! I had so many records that I would forget what I had, and then sift through them all like shopping all over again, discovering them all over again. I used to walk to the local record stores every weekend, and hit Plastic Fantastic on the Main Line regularly to add to my collection.

Fast forward to art college in Oakland, California. I saw so much music while being submerged in art for the years I lived there during and after college it was incredible. The City (San Francisco) lives and breathes music... and so does Oakland. I got exposed to incredible jazz, acid jazz, funk, soul and rap. It was immense and incredible... and priceless. I saw Charlie Hunter in small clubs before anyone knew his name, I saw TJ Kirk during their short lived mind blowing career, i saw Dave Ellis in a coffee shop blowing his heart out... it was endless. I rode my bike to Amoeba music every Saturday like clockwork. It was a ritual I loved and looked forward to all week.

It seems that my entire adult life comprised itself of art and music... always merging the two. After college I lived in Hawaii for a while, then back to CA. I moved to Los Angeles and landed a job at Disney Feature Animation. I loved working there, it was like going back to art college but this time getting paid for it! I worked on and have credit on many films including Hercules, Mulan, Tarzan, A Bug's Life, The Emporer's New Groove, Atlantis, Toy Story 2, Dinosaur, and Fantasia 2000. I ventured to Jazz Fest in New Orleans every year to see my good friends and get that jazz fix I always seemed to need. Almost everywhere I visited or lived I had to see live music in some form or another. Always.

After leaving disney I ventured into uncharted waters with a few start ups, mostly unsuccessful and quite draining. One of which was Comedy Radio. I worked for Comedy World Radio Network as the head of a creative department and as a radio show producer and co-host. This got me interested in radio and I worked with some very funny people who were quite inspiring and passionate about radio. Once that folded... I left CA and moved closer to family in Florida. Oddly enough I was recruited for a design gig for XM Satellite Radio. After being there for a couple years I hounded Russ Davis enough about adding some new jazz funk jamband stuff he had not heard, that he asked me to do a demo for a show. The rest is history! After eight years with XM... here we are with MOJA RADIO! The NEW place for all things Modern Jazz...
